The Trigger
A single synthetic image: a photorealistic depiction of a public religious figure in a garment he never wore, generated by a diffusion model. Detected-synthetic (its origin is confirmed). It depicts nothing that happened.
The Amplitude
It moved as fact. Tens of millions saw it within days, a large share believing it real — widely marked afterward as the first synthetic still image to fool a mainstream audience at scale. The amplification was overwhelmingly organic: ordinary people sharing a striking, plausible picture.
The Mechanism of Infection
Three ingredients, none of them the image alone. Photorealism removed the tell. The absence of any provenance signal removed the check. And engagement-ranked feeds reward a striking image regardless of truth, so the more it was shared the more it was shown — and *being seen everywhere became its own proof of being real.* The loop closed when familiarity itself ("I've seen this a hundred times") stood in for verification.
